During Earth Day 2023 people around the world gathered to put together activities centered on six major themes, one of which was “Fashion for the Earth”. This theme was in line with SINGTEX® REFIT™ our new garment to garment program that we launched last fall at the Tian-zhong Marathon. With REFIT™, 100% polyester garments are giving a new life through textile-to-textile recycling.
In order to establish a corporate culture of “reuse before recycling,” during Christmas 2022 SINGTEX® held its first REFIT™ Second-hand Clothing Market. The event was a huge success and we received enthusiastic participation and support from employees.
This month in response to this year’s Earth Day theme, we decided to hold another REFIT™ Second-hand Clothing Market.
After the three-day event, a total of 93 clothing items were donated by colleagues from 9 different departments. 75.3% of the donated clothing was able to find new owners, and given a new life. This was a 21.6% rise in clothing getting rehomed when compared with our first event during Christmas 2022, which shows that SINGTEX® employees are fully embracing the initiative.
Remaining items were divided into two categories :
1. SINGTEX® REFIT™ Garment to Garment Recycling Program
Clothing made from 100% polyester which will be recycled in SINGTEX REFIT, our garment to garment recycling program.
2. Hsinye Association
Hsinye Association, a charity in Taipei City that runs rehabilitation programs for adults with intellectual disabilities.
In line with the Earth Day message of fixing issues within the fashion industry we are encouraging our employees to change their relationships with their clothing and think about the full lifecycle of every new purchase. This is all a part of remembering that with the three Rs, recycling comes last. We should first find ways to reduce and reuse before we recycle. Our hope is that through these activities our colleagues will join in together to protect the environment and participate in the slow fashion movement.
